We Must Build The Monorail
There are times where communities face critical tests: do they build for the future, or retreat to the past. This is one of those times for the citizens of Seattle. After four votes and years of careful planning, we have a fixed-price, guaranteed contract to build the 14 mile Green Line for $1.95 billion, connecting West Seattle, the stadiums, downtown, Seattle Center, Queen Anne, and Ballard. If we fail to follow through our children and grandchildren will look back on this as the latest missed opportunity to build a real rapid transit system in Seattle.
A Growing Population
Authorities project that Seattle will swell to a population of 718,000 by 2030. Without proper planning that kind of growth could result in total gridlock on our streets. The monorail will carry tens of thousands of people per day up above the traffic congestion. It will allow us to build density downtown to allow more housing choices and put more job opportunities within easy reach.
Need Transportation Alternatives that Don't Depend On Oil
With the cost of oil rising above $60 per barrel, it will save families thousands of dollars in gas over their lifetime. And monorail's clean, efficient use of electricity will help do our part for the environment and cut the production of gases that cause global warming.
Provides An Alternative To Unpredictable Viaduct
The planned replacement of the Viaduct will cause over 100,000 vehicles per day to flood city streets. The monorail Green Line will provide a key alternative route that will preserve a connection between downtown and affected neighborhoods such as West Seattle, Magnolia, and Ballard.
Follows Through on 40-year old Plans & Promises
Mass transit in Seattle has a checkered history of failing at the last minute. In the 60's and 70's, voters narrowly defeated plans to build a comprehensive mass transit system at a time when the federal government would pick up most of the tab. Now we look back at that missed opportunity wish we could go back and make things right. There will be no excuse if we fail to act this final time. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a fast, high-capacity transit system to link together our neighborhoods to downtown. Don't pass it up
